Artificial Intelligence Powered Learning (2024-Present)
We are leading several research projects (PIs: Fatima Zahra, Shyamal Chowdhury, David Bowers, and Jiangen He) examining the future of learning and the labor market in multiple countries, including Bangladesh and the USA. It explores the skills and knowledge gap in the labor market and the integration of generative AI in critical pedagogy to teach foundational skills in (a) AI literacy, (b) critical thinking, and (c) coding to students in different age groups, ranging from middle school to graduate school. One of our project ideas “Critical Thinking with Gen AI” received the AAAI/ACM SIGAI Innovative AI Education Award at the Annual Meeting of the Applied Artificial Intelligence Association in March 2025.

Sustainable Livelihood for Refugees (2024-Present)
This exploratory study (PIs: Fatima Zahra, Jere Behrman, and Nglula Fleurant) investigates the barriers to gainful employment among Rohingya fathers in refugee camps and design sustainable livelihoods. Limited employment opportunities within the camps have been linked to adverse mental-health outcomes for fathers, hindering their capacity to support their families. The research is funded by IKEA Foundation.

Impact of Climate Change on Human Development (2023-Present)
The papers from this study examines the link between climate changes manifested by poor air quality, high frequency natural disasters, rise in temperature and development outcomes among children in some of the most vulnerable regions in the world. This project is supported by the National Science Foundation through our partners at the University of Pennsylvania.
